I’m not even going to say it. Nuh-uh. Straight to the questions this week!
AA 81: Have you ever Googled your name? What did you find that surprised you?
Not recently, but of course I have Googled my name. Most of what comes up is my own publicity – this blog, my Goodreads page, my Twitter feed (which is basically these blog posts). What surprised me most is that there is another author out there whose name is Erica Dakin-Voolich. Here I was thinking that my name was pretty unique, didn’t even bother checking before I started publishing under my own name, and then I came across ED-V.
I have no idea what she writes. I don’t particularly care, to be honest. I’ve set up a Google alert* which e-mails me every time my name crops up somewhere, but that mainly results in illegal download sites that offer my books up for free. Well, my first book, usually. It doesn’t look like they’ve found the other two yet. I’ve tried to put a stop to it, but it’s pointless, really.
A quick Google search just now shows no change – no fan page extolling my virtues and urging people to buy my trilogy.
Anyway, AA 82: How did you get your cover art done?
I called on family, basically. My eldest nephew has done a graphics degree, so he was an obvious choice. I also have a friend with a graphics degree, who did the covers for my hobbit novels, and I honestly don’t really know why I didn’t go to her for my other covers as well, because she did a great job on the hobbit ones. It may have been the result of a conversation between my nephew and me, I can’t remember, but anyway I ended up with him. Hey, this was in 2013, sue me for not remembering.
Anyway, I was in a hurry and kind of wanted it done on the cheap. I also quite liked the covers of the Song of Ice and Fire books I have, so my own covers are trying to emulate those a bit.
In hindsight it probably wasn’t the best choice for a Fantasy Romance series. The fantasy bit – sure. The romance? Not so much. But it’s all water under the bridge – what’s done is done and I’m not going to change it. The series as a whole is decent, but not good enough to throw any more money at it. That said, I do still intend to publish the accompanying volume of erotic short stories at some point (no, I’m not going to speculate about dates), and my intention is for that cover to deviate from the trilogy somewhat. For that cover I will commission a piece of artwork from my favourite artist, Linn Standal. She is an old friend from one of the Elfquest fanholts I used to be a member of, and I have always adored her art. (And hey, look, there’s a picture of Rock, my old Elfquest character on there. Hey there, handsome!)
The picture will be of Kai, Sita and Thiro, probably in some sort of soft-pornish pose but nothing too racy or Amazon won’t approve it. I really really want to ask her to start doing it, but I have to finish the damn book first. It’s mostly there, but I’m stuck on the last few stories, and on the fact that I don’t have a reliable editor who doesn’t mind reading steamy sex scenes.

Original post for AA 82 is here. Thanks go, as always, to Jay Dee for starting the whole project in the first place.
*I lied – I asked my husband to do it. (Just in case anyone is about to ask how you do that, because I don’t have a clue!)
